A whistleblower has come forward with explosive information linking Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), sparking a high-profile investigation by the House Oversight Committee.
The committee, chaired by Representative James Comer (R-KY), has subpoenaed Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Chief Alejandro Mayorkas to release documents detailing the nature of these connections.
The revelations center around allegations that Walz, a former member of Congress and currently Kamala Harris’s vice-presidential running mate, has maintained a cozy and longstanding relationship with the CCP.
According to whistleblower disclosures, in a non-classified Microsoft Teams group chat, DHS employees communicated about Walz’s ties to the Chinese government. This group chat, named “NST NFT Bi-Weekly Sync,” is said to include information relevant to the ongoing investigation.
The House Oversight Committee disclosed the whistleblower’s claims on Monday, announcing that the subpoena was issued to DHS Secretary Mayorkas to gather intelligence reports, documents, and communications regarding Governor Walz’s connection to the CCP.
“We’ve learned of a non-classified, Microsoft Teams group chat among DHS employees and further intelligence reports that contain information regarding a longstanding connection between the CCP and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz,” the committee said in its official statement.
The subpoena requires Mayorkas to provide the requested documents by October 7. The scope of the investigation includes both classified and unclassified reports, further indicating the seriousness of the allegations.
In addition to Mayorkas, Chairman Comer has requested FBI Director Christopher Wray to conduct a comprehensive review of any relevant documents related to Governor Walz’s engagements with CCP-affiliated entities.
Comer’s inquiry extends to potential advisories or warnings that the FBI may have issued to Governor Walz regarding CCP influence operations.
Chairman Comer has raised alarms about the CCP’s pervasive efforts to influence American political figures. “The CCP has sought to destroy the United States through coordinated influence and infiltration campaigns that target every aspect of American life, including our own elected officials,” Comer said.
He emphasized that Walz’s relationship with China raises serious concerns, especially as he stands as Kamala Harris’s running mate.
The accusations against Governor Walz are particularly significant given his extensive history with China.
Walz has reportedly visited China multiple times and previously served as a fellow at a Chinese institution with close ties to the CCP. He has also spoken alongside officials from organizations linked to Chinese influence operations.
Comer pointed out that the State Department has identified at least one such organization as part of China’s efforts to co-opt and influence local U.S. leaders.
“The American people deserve to fully understand how deep Governor Walz’s relationship with China goes,” Comer said. He added that the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force has investigated similar cases, which involve the CCP’s engagement with U.S. political figures, further supporting the need for transparency in the case of Walz.
However, the investigation has met with resistance from Democratic lawmakers, who have dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.
Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, sharply criticized Comer’s actions, suggesting that the timing of the subpoena—on the eve of the vice-presidential debate—is suspicious.
Raskin labeled the investigation an attempt to distract from the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.
In a statement, Raskin said, “What do you know, it’s the eve of the vice-presidential debate, and Chairman Comer has apparently been assigned another flotsam and jetsam errand from the GOP’s political smear barrel.”
He further accused Comer of throwing out a “boomerang bombshell” in an attempt to damage Walz’s reputation.
Raskin also downplayed the substance of the whistleblower’s claims, sarcastically remarking that Comer’s investigation hinges on a casual conversation about Governor Walz on a Microsoft Teams chat.
He suggested that the GOP’s efforts are part of a broader attempt to shift attention away from ongoing investigations into Donald Trump’s legal troubles.
The political implications of this investigation are significant, given Walz’s rising profile as Kamala Harris’s vice-presidential candidate.
While Comer and other Republicans insist the investigation is about uncovering potential threats posed by foreign influence, Democrats argue that it is merely another partisan ploy aimed at discrediting Harris’s running mate ahead of the 2024 election.
As the October 7 deadline approaches, all eyes are on DHS Secretary Mayorkas to determine whether he will comply with the subpoena and release the documents requested by the House Oversight Committee.
