Texas Stops Border Wall Funding; Federal Government Plans to Take Over

Texas has decided to stop funding the construction of a wall along its southern border, a responsibility now anticipated to shift to the federal government. This decision follows years of assertive spending by Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who had previously announced that the state would continue building former President Donald Trump’s border wall independently. As of April, the state had completed only 61.8 miles of the wall, a small portion of the over-1,200-mile border with Mexico, according to the Texas Facilities Commission. In early June, Texas state lawmakers finalized a $3.4 billion budget for border security for the year. Republican Texas State Senator Joan Huffman, who played a key role in drafting the budget, confirmed to The Tribune that funds would not be allocated towards further wall construction. The proposed bill includes funding for approximately 10,000 new personnel for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security criminal investigators. It also allocates resources for land and air transportation to support border security operations. In addition, the bill proposes the construction of over 700 miles of new border wall and hundreds of miles of additional barriers.
