Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) is not one to back down from a fight, especially when it comes to protecting the American people. And that’s exactly what she plans to do in response to Attorney General Merrick Garland’s refusal to turn over audio tapes of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s interviews with President Joe Biden.
During an appearance on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” host Maria Bartiromo asked Luna about the Department of Justice’s decision not to prosecute Garland for contempt of Congress and what Congress has planned in response.
Garland has been under fire since he refused to comply with a subpoena from the House Oversight Committee, which requested audio recordings of Hur’s interviews with Biden regarding his son Hunter’s business dealings in Ukraine.
The committee believes these tapes could provide crucial evidence in their ongoing investigation into potential corruption within the Biden family.
But despite multiple requests and even a contempt citation from Congress, Garland has stood firm in his refusal to hand over the tapes, citing executive privilege and claiming that releasing them would harm national security.
However, many Republicans, including Luna, see this as just another attempt by Democrats to cover up any wrongdoing by the Bidens. Luna stated, “The American people deserve transparency and accountability from their government. We cannot allow Democrats like Merrick Garland to continue sweeping things under the rug.”
In addition to her strong words, Luna also revealed that she is working on legislation that would hold government officials accountable for refusing congressional subpoenas. She stated, “We need consequences for those who blatantly disregard our laws and refuse to cooperate with legitimate investigations.”
Luna explained that she “introduced a resolution for something called inherent contempt of Congress” a few months ago because she “anticipated that the Department of Justice would not do their job.”
“And what that allows Congress to do is really be the punitive arm and really hold Garland accountable by using the sergeant at arms to essentially go and get him as well as the tapes, bring him to the House, and really be a check and balance on the Department of Justice. Again, this hasn’t been done since the early 1900s, but that vote will be coming to the floor. And hopefully we will be able to bring some accountability. I know that if this goes to courts, as Johnson has stated, that’s really going to get stuck there. It’s not going to do anything. And the American people deserve more than strongly worded letters. I think we’re all frustrated. And so, again, we’re hoping to bring that accountability.”
This move has been met with support from other Republican lawmakers, who believe that it is time to take a stand against the Biden administration’s blatant disregard for congressional oversight.
But Luna’s actions have also sparked criticism from Democrats and left-leaning media outlets, who accuse her of playing politics and wasting time on a non-issue. However, Luna remains steadfast in her pursuit of justice and refuses to back down.
As she stated in an interview with RedState, “It’s not about politics, it’s about doing what’s right for the American people. If we allow government officials to ignore congressional subpoenas without consequence, then we are setting a dangerous precedent for future administrations.”
Luna’s determination to hold Garland accountable has also caught the attention of conservative Americans across the country. Social media has been flooded with messages of support for Luna and calls for action against Garland.
In addition to her legislative efforts, Luna is also calling on President Biden himself to intervene and order Garland to turn over the tapes. She stated, “If President Biden truly has nothing to hide, then he should have no problem releasing these tapes. It’s time for him to step up and show some transparency.”
The battle between Congress and the Department of Justice is far from over, but thanks to Rep. Anna Paulina Luna’s bold actions, there may finally be consequences for those who refuse to cooperate with legitimate investigations.
